Kalaratri is the Mother Goddess's seventh form. Her complexion is as dark as the night. Her cascading hair is flowing and she is seen wearing a garland that radiates light as bright as lightning. She radiates fire and is fearsome with her menacing three eyes radiating fire. She is mounted on an donkey. She has four hands with the top right hand positioned in a gesture of rendering boons to all. The bottom right hand dipicts fearlessness. The top left hand holds an iron dagger and the bottom left hand holds a sickle.

Although Kalaratri Mother Goddess has a menacing appearance, she always delivers favorable results and her devotees need not fear her manifestations in holding an iron dagger and sickle. Although she has a menacing appearance, she always delivers favorable results and her devotees need not fear her manifestations. She is worshiped on the seventh day of the Durga puja. Devi Kaalratri destroys evil. If anyone whole-heartedly pleads, She will rescue that one from any impending danger; she protects him. When the Goddess is called, the evils instantaneously disappear from the place. By the Goddess's grace, the devotees overcome their fear of fire, water, animals and foes

I recently visited the ruins of the Jythuk Fort in Sirmour, Himachal Pradesh. In 1815 this was the site of the famous Anglo-Gorkha Battle of Jythuk which was led by General Martindell from the British side and Ranjore Singh Thapa from the Gorkha side. Thapa's army won this battle. Some years ago the locals discovered the idol of Kaalratri Devi amongst the ruins here which had been consecrated and worshipped by the Gorkhas and left behind after they had to leave the region. Now she has been enconsced in a little shrine and is worshipped everyday. The locals believe that ever since that the region has been prospering. Jai Kaalratri Devi
